MY PUBLISHING

The Age of Sale

Christie's is selling Maritime art this week. When you look into it, there's more than just a few knick-knacks from old ships knocking around this corner of the collecting world.

Read my story here.

Old World and New

The new year starts with a bang in the auction world with back to back weeks of Americana sales and Old Master Drawings and Paintings.

Read the stories and let me know what you think.

London Wares Visit New York

Sotheby's has a travelling exhibition promoting the highlights of next month's Impressionist and Modern paintings sale in London. See my preview here

Christie's Expands Interiors

Not the most earth shattering news. But it is interesting that Christie's--in the midst of the greatest boom in the art market ever--is pushing ahead in what the trade calls the "middle market." That's the so-called affordable stuff to mere mortals.

Read my story in the New York Sun here.

Is Art Basel Miami the new Woodstock for the Rich?

Just in time for the opening of the art world's Christmas party to itself, Portfolio.com has published my preview of the fair.

Topping Off Sales with Phillips

The dust settles on auction week with a final report on the market--and the sale at Phillips. Read it here.

Last Night at Christie's

The Contemporary Art market made a strong showing at Christie's last night. Here's my report. More later in the week.

Battle of the Rothkos

Sotheby's has been weak in Contemporary art for several seasons. But now, when they need it most, the auction house has its strongest Contemporary sale in years. Christie's and Sotheby's are battling it out with comparable works by Rothko, Basquiat and Koon. Read the preview here.

Strength in the Market

Everybody is anticipating a fall in art prices but last night's sales at Christie's showed surprising strength.

Here's a brief report from the New York Sun.

Two Impressions of the Same Market

Just as the credit crisis re-emerges, the Autumn Auction season is getting underway. Here is a preview of the Impressionist and Modern art sales at Christie's and Sotheby's. The sales take place Tuesday and Wednesday evening.

Until then, take a look at the two very different ways each house sees the Impressionist and Modern market going published in the New York Sun today.

Watching Paint Fry

The art market is at the height of an unprecedented boom. Paintings that once cost $1 million are now $10 million and the rise is all about new collectors with very deep pockets. But how do those collectors get into the notoriously closed and condescending art world? Why, they hire an art adviser.

This profile of Kim Heirston appears in this week's New York Magazine.

Warhol vs. The Dow

Sometimes the best stories come from a stray question. That's what happened here when an editor at the NY Sun asked how a Warhol painting had compared to the Dow as an investment. In a few rare cases, the paintings beat some pretty sophisticated investors.
